Cause of Color

Green diamonds are one of the most difficult diamonds to value and understand on the colored diamond market. the reason for this is the way in which green diamonds are formed. Caused by exposure to natural irradiation during the diamonds formation, the color of green diamonds can either be throughout the stone or just present on the surface.

Origin of green diamonds

Natural-color green diamonds are rare and beautiful, with a variety of defects that can be responsible for their color. today, most are discovered in south American or African mines. the main causes of green color in gem diamonds, either as the sole mechanism or in combination, are vacancies produced by radiation. Green diamonds are found predominately in regions of Africa and south America. the Dresden Green is the most famous green diamond. Weighing approximately 41 carats, it is often referred to as the cousin of the Hope Diamond for its historical importance.

Among fancy-color diamonds, natural-color green stones with saturated hues are some of the rarest and most sought after. these diamonds are colored either by simple structural defects produced by radiation exposure or by more complex defects involving nitrogen, hydrogen, or nickel impurities. Green diamonds can cover a wide range of colors and may have secondary colors, e.g. green, brown and blue. Olive, minty and seafoam finishes are similar in the colors.

Pure green diamonds are extremely rare and highly valued Only a handful of natural green diamonds are introduced into the market each year making green diamonds some of the most sought after of all natural color diamonds.
